E.T. Jordan & Sons General Merchandise, Carter
Part commerce and part museum with its odd assortment of all things Delta, Jordan’s store was the center of the world in the town of Carter. Mounted deer with impressive antlers, a fox on point, a stalking bobcat and other wild life bear witness to a love of hunting. My favorite item is the mule collar. I like to imagine that it’s been there since a note was written on the wall marking the level of flood waters in 1927. High water invaded the store again in 2011, when the Yazoo River overflowed for miles. By 2013, this original structure was still standing but unsafe to enter, and the Jordan store had moved next door.
